First Sub-4 Minute Mile in Memphis?

Inaugural Ed Murphey Mile draws national class field including rising young star Craig Engels for sub-4 quest.

On the 50th anniversary of Roger Bannister becoming the first man in history to run a Mile in under four minutes, Mike Cody and Ed Murphey — two of the greatest runners this area has ever produced — met at the Rhodes track and ran a mile together. Just to mark the occasion.

“We certainly didn’t run it in four minutes,” said Cody, now 81.

Indeed, nobody has ever run a Mile in under four minutes in the city of Memphis, a fact that should change Saturday at the inaugural Ed Murphey Mile, which will be run under the lights at Christian Brothers High School at 9:00pm, in conjunction with a high-profile high school cross country event.
