Sir Roger Bannister on Running

October 14, 2012

By Nia Mason, ITV Meridian

Sir Roger Bannister started them off, and thousands of runners set off on the Oxford Half Marathon this morning. While it was an honour for many of the runners to meet one of their sporting heroes in the flesh, Sir Roger himself, said he was honoured to still be invited to take part in running events in some way.

Sir Roger was made famous by becoming the first man to run a Mile in under four minutes. He achieved the sub four minute Mile in 1954, in Oxford, alongside his pacemakers Chris Brasher and Chris Chataway. Speaking to ITV Meridian, Sir Roger Bannister spoke about remembering a time when it was hard to get even one hundred people to agree to run in a national race, let alone the thousands who take part in marathons and runs now.
