After everything that had gone haywire for New York distance star Laura Leff during the past year — all the injuries, uncertainties and lost time — what were the chances that when she was finally healthy and back in the groove some goofball would blithely stray onto the track and right into Leff’s path during a big race?

That’s what took place last Wednesday night at Onondaga Community College in the Section 3 meet. Leff, a 16-year-old West Genesee junior who will compete in the Millrose Games high school girls Mile at the New York Armory on Saturday, set out in the 1,000 meters against Mary Barger and Katie Brislin, two members of Fayetteville’s 2012 national championship cross country squad. The field was on the second of five laps with Leff ahead, when a boy in the meet happened to saunter out into Lane 1.
