February 27, 2014

First major sponsor of BBTM campaign to elevate, celebrate iconic distance

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – (February 27, 2014) – Bring Back the Mile, the national campaign to elevate and celebrate the iconic distance, has announced HOKA ONE ONE as a BBTM sponsor. HOKA ONE ONE, with its revolutionary shoe design, is expanding beyond the ultra and trail running market.

“We heartily welcome HOKA ONE ONE as our first major Bring Back the Mile sponsor,” said BBTM Founder Ryan Lamppa. “We are excited about this partnership as together we share a common vision and passion for the Mile and for celebrating the sport and athletes of all abilities. Go Mile!”

“HOKA ONE ONE is a shoe for everyone, whether you are on your first Mile or going after a sub-4 minute Mile,” stated President of HOKA ONE ONE Jim Van Dine. “We look forward to working with BBTM and together promoting the storied distance. I fondly remember my quest to break five minutes in the Mile as a junior high school athlete and that initial goal set me on a path to have a successful running and professional career.”

In addition to the BBTM sponsorship, HOKA ONE ONE is sponsoring a number of athletes, including Nicole Schappert (Mile PR 4:30.65) and Mike Rutt (Mile PR 3:57.18) of the NJ/NY Track Club as well as 2013 USA Masters Road Mile champion and 2008 Olympian Magdalena Lewy Boulet.

About Bring Back the Mile
The Mile holds a special place in Track & Field and beyond because no running distance, or field event for that matter, has the history, the appeal, the “magic” of the Mile. The first sub-4 minute Mile by Great Britain’s Roger Bannister in 1954 is regarded as the greatest individual athletic achievement of the 20th century (see Forbes November 18, 2005 article HERE), and no other event has produced an equivalent of the sub-4 minute Mile standard in the sport, in the media and in the public’s mind.

Over the past decade-plus, unfortunately, the Mile has lost some of its luster, and thus, Bring Back the Mile was launched in January 2012 with the mission: To return the Mile to prominence on the American sports and cultural landscape by elevating and celebrating the Mile to create a national movement.
