Robby Andrews Secures World Championships 1500m Qualifier

Former Staten Islander Robby Andrews is going to London thanks to a little help from his friends!

At Thursday night's Tracktown USA Championship meet held in Icahn Stadium, Andrews, who two weeks ago won his first USA Track & Field Championship 1500 meters title, still had failed to meet the 3 minute, 36 second time standard to run in next month's IAAF World Outdoor Championships. With cool twilight weather, steadily decreasing temperatures and of course his hometown fans cheering him on along the sides of the track, Andrews delivered successfully, as the Island native finished second behind Johnny Gregorek (3:35.0) in the time of 3:35.25, earning his ticket to London in August.

"I was happy with everything," said an exalted Andrews prior to the race. "I was keeping my energy even-keeled going in."

In the race, Andrews, who grew up and attended high school in Manalapan, N.J., stayed in contention both in time and place, hovering from fifth place around two laps into the race and then moving up to fourth.
