High School Miler Bernie Montoya to Race in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The top high school Miler in the United States is coming to Greensboro next weekend.

Fresh off clocking a 4:01.71 Mile at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., senior Bernie Montoya of Yuma, Ariz., will compete at the New Balance Nationals June 14-16 at Irwin Belk Track at NC A&T.

Cibola High School track and field coach Kris Norton confirmed today that Montoya would run, likely competing in the Mile. Norton said event organizers will set up a camera at the 1600 meter mark so that Montoya’s 1600m time can be measured.

Montoya broke onto the national scene last June in New York, when he won the adidas Dream Mile as junior with a time of 4:01.32, the best mark in the nation that season.

The Dream Mile is an invite-only event that attempts to assemble the 14 best high school distance runners in the country.

While Montoya placed fourth in this year’s Dream Mile, he snagged the best time in the United States at the Pre Classic. If he runs the Mile again at New Balance Nationals, he will be looking for a coveted sub-4 minute time.
